Recap of the Opening Ceremony

Yesterday, months of anticipation finally came to an end when Emily Roshop declared OLMUN 2025 as officially opened. As this year’s Secretary-General, Emily expressed her gratitude to the eager audience for being in honor of delivering the opening speech. Reflecting on her own journey at OLMUN, as well as the organization of this year’s

conference, she emphasized, what a pleasure it has been to work with all attendees.

With great respect, she remembered the recently deceased Margot Friedländer, a Holocaust survivor who never ceased her fight for peace, even at the age of 103. Her person should remind us all of our responsibility for the present and the future and encourage us to become active.

The other speakers struck a similarly urged tone.

Svenja Hahn, Member of the European Parliament and Patron of OLMUN 2025, shared her motivation for entering politics, which stemmed from frustration. She recounted how meeting young people across Europe taught her about the diverse realities they face and emphasized the importance of increasing dialogue, especially during global crises. Stating, "When the world is crumbling, we cannot just sit back", she urged everyone to do their part for a better future.

Via a video message, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, delivered an inspiring speech as well, and Beate Streicher from Amnesty International Germany addressed the delegates, emphasizing that “human rights need people.”

In her speech, Christine Wolff, the Mayor of Oldenburg, spoke warmly about the city and its vibrant spirit. She praised the hard work behind OLMUN and reminded everyone to enjoy life as well: “Don’t forget to have fun.”

Besides the contributions of the guest speakers, the delegates were also given opportunity to deliver speeches in six different sessions. While most were well-received, some tensions arose. The conflict between Israel and Palestine caused notable friction: Israel remained firm and refused to cede space to Palestine. Spain openly supported Palestine and left the room in protest to deny Israel a platform. During a speech by Russia, the Ukrainian delegation turned around in protest and Venezuelan delegation turned their backs to the stage while the United States delivered a speech.

All in all, the Opening Ceremony was a successful kick-off for the following three days, creating joyful anticipation for exciting debates in the committees!
