Happy Birthday, OLMUN and congratulations to everyone who is involved in this success story! This year the Oldenburg Model United Nations conference celebrates its 20th anniversary. Unfortunately, the global coronavirus pandemic crosses our plans. But I hope we can make up for the celebration next year. I am really looking forward to the OLMUN 2021. I am sure it will be again a success all down the line!
Over the past few years, the conference has developed into an impressive event and figurehead for our city. The OLMUN has managed to catch young people's interest in politics and democracy. At the conference they can gain first-hand experience in discussing different topics and negotiating compromises.
This creates a deeper understanding of political debates and structures. The newly acquired skills will be useful in school, at university as well as for life in general.
Besides, the OLMUN supports cultural exchange and friendship across borders.
With more than 900 young participants from Germany, Turkey, the Netherlands, Hungary, Iran, Israel and Belarus the event brings international flair to Oldenburg. Staying with local host families and a variety of evening activities during the four days of the conference forge a strong bond between the participants. So the OLMUN makes an important contribution to cultural openness and tolerance in our city!
The organizing committees of the OLMUN have more than once demonstrated successfully what young people can achieve. Our conference is not only Germany´s largest Model United Nations Conference, but has grown to be Europe´s largest MUN organized by students – which is definitely something to be proud of!
I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in organizing the OLMUN over the past 20 years. You have all contributed to the success of this conference. I know it is an enormous task to orchestrate an event of this magnitude. By taking care of every detail you showed great commitment. I would also express my thanks to all the sponsors who have taken a vital part in making the OLMUN possible again and again.
